Police are looking for two persons in connection with the roadside necklace theft in the 700 block of East Meadow Drive in Palo Alto on October 23, 2021. The two were sitting in a silver car. Provided by Palo Alto Police Department.

On Saturday afternoon, Palo Alto police are seeking public assistance in investigating the theft of a gold necklace on the roadside near Mitchell Park.

The theft was reported to the police at about 4:40 pm on October 23. At that time, the city’s 24-hour dispatch center received a call from a woman in her 70s who said that her necklace was stolen 45 minutes ago. Her husband, the police said in a press release on Monday.

The couple were in the 700 block of East Meadow Drive when a vehicle carrying three people approached them: a man in the driver's seat, a woman in the front passenger seat, and a child under 10 in the back seat.

According to the police, after the driver stopped in front of the couple, the female passenger talked to the old woman. She believed that the passenger was speaking Urdu. The driver tried to distract him by talking to the old woman's husband in English with a strong accent.

Before getting off the bus, the female passenger put a gold necklace on the old woman's neck, as if she had given her jewelry.

"The victim could not understand what the female suspect said to her during the interaction," according to the press release.

Police said the driver left the area about two minutes later and drove west along East Meadow Drive to Middlefield Road. After the vehicle left, the woman found that the female passenger had taken two gold necklaces from her neck while placing another gold necklace.

The female passenger is described as a woman in her 50s with a scarf and face mask on her head. According to the police, her skin is "darker" and may be of Middle Eastern or Romanian descent. The couple could not describe the driver.

The police stated that the driver and the female passenger never got out of the car during the exchange.

This car is an old silver car. According to the police, officers searched the area for home surveillance cameras and found a camera that took pictures of cars.
